1962 alachua block house

An homage to marble, this vintage inspired kitchen remodel transformed a cave-like interior kitchen into a spacious kitchen/dining area. A unique galley layout with a supersized island created ample storage and an abundance of uninterupted workspace. Natural materials such as carrara marble countertops, soapstone sink, wood flooring and cabinetry, and recycled glass tile bring texture, softness and warmth into the kitchen. A wall of white was implemented to add lightness and height to a kitchen with barely a window and unattractively low ceilings. A custom sink and 60″ stove, along with a three piece collection of vintage Seth Thomas advertisement clocks, personalized the homeowners space. The use of stainless steel restaurant shelving was an economical and creative solution to eliminating wall cabinets yet expanding storage space. Tiny details such as the industrial style kickplate on the laundry room door adds interest and charm to this functionally stylish kitchen in a 1960′s Florida block house. 1834 academy house

The small, secluded kitchen in this 1834 farm house, originally the administrative building of an early American seminary, posed many design challenges. Originally, there were four doorways and one large, low window. A back staircase was removed and a cellar door closed off and covered in handmade brick tiles to appear as a hearth area. A white enamel Jotul propane stove compliments the homestead aesthetic, as does the variegated width oak plank flooring. Soapstone countertops and sink are a nod towards period accuracy. Jelly jar flush mount lights echo the custom jelly cabinet mounted over the large custom sink. A white marble subway tile backsplash and Victorian sand cast cabinet pulls and knobs further the look of an American kitchen updated over time. Walnut stained pine custom cabinets are economical as well as beautiful. The homeowner longed for stacked cabinetry but that was not in the budget. Nevertheless, a singular corner wall cabinet faced with two doors–one done in old looking wavy glass to match the original windows of the house–satiates that yearning. The Academy House Kitchen is an excellent example of a budget period-style kitchen. For more pictures, visit the 1834 Academy House Gallery.
